Fasting Is The Manifestation Of Love for Your Creator

The blessings of ramadan and and calmness during this month is a feeling believers can hold on to for their life .This practice of self control and patience is an opportunity of endless and priceless transformation for the body and soul.Self control, Self reflection, is not an easy task, when our distracted , confused and irascible natures are part of our creation. The biggest struggle one faces is to resist our own desires ,when during that month the permissible becomes impermissible, like food, water, even lawful duties in the marital relationship.

Fasting is called صوم  in the Qur’an. The word sawm literally means “to abstain” ,Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, viewed fasting as a means of releasing the human spirit from the clutches of desire, thus allowing moderation to prevail in the carnal self. But the point is to control our desires we need a greater purpose ,otherwise human beings get tired or bored, we need sense of purpose and direction, otherwise we begin looking for reasons to give up.Having said that, what else  reason a believer can need ,when there is a great reason like love and obedience  when a believer’s every action is for the sake his creator. The endless magnitude of this reason is enough to continue the struggle .Mansur Al-Hallaj said ““The beloved does not drink a single drop of water without seeing His Face in the cup”

During the Holy month of Ramadan  when a believer refrain from what’s permissible , the reward is doubled, especially for a believer, the love of his creator is immense .Rumi said “Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love” ,when you are lover , you forget every desire of your own.Even the lovers of the world refrain themselves from food, sleep and anything else until they’re with the one their lovers . Fasting during the month of Ramadan is a practice of patience and demonstration of love .Especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan,  like a mad lover , the believers search for the love and mercy of their Lord . It’s an opportunity for soul to find the connection, control and achieve a state of peacefulness.
